Body Lift
Body lift procedures are offered as part of Dr. Charles Slack’s plastic surgery practice based in Allen, Texas for patients in Plano, McKinney, and the surrounding communities. A “body lift” may actually entail a number of different procedures, which together provide contouring of the body to achieve a slimmer silhouette and a healthier physique by removing excess or sagging skin at multiple body sites.
It can be difficult for an individual to assess whether the condition of his or her body is appropriate for a body lift versus other methods of toning or revision, including diet/exercise and liposuction. Dr. Slack will discuss your specific desires and needs with you in private consultations, and together you and he can arrive at a decision regarding the particular procedure(s) that best meet your goals.
Who Is a Candidate for a Body Lift?
A body lift may be appropriate for a healthy individual for whom diet and exercise have been ineffective for sufficiently toning the body, particularly in light of the following, for example:
- significant weight loss
- multiple pregnancies
- genetic predisposition
- loss of skin elasticity with age
A candidate for a body lift should be at or very close to his or her final, ideal weight prior to undergoing the procedure. Dr. Slack will provide you with all of the relevant information about the pros, cons, benefits, and risks of the body lift procedures that would be appropriate for you at a personal consultation.
As with all surgeries, individuals who smoke regularly will be advised to quit their habit at least two weeks prior to the scheduled procedure. Cigarette or cigar smoking has a negative effect on the body’s ability to heal after surgery, including body lifts.

What A Body Lift Entails
A body lift could include various upper and lower body procedures used to tighten skin and redefine your silhouette.
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, or other surgical procedures on the upper body, such as an arm lift to remove excess and hanging skin, are all possibilities. A body lift could also include other procedures such a breast lift for a female patient or liposuction of excess male breast tissue. Indeed, a number of combinations of procedures can comprise a body lift.
In contrast, a lower-body lift is used to remove and re-contour loose, sagging skin at locations such as:
- hips,
- outer thighs,
- posterior (back of the) thighs,
- anterior (front of the) thighs, and
- buttocks.
Multiple Body Areas Improved in a Body Lift
Multiple areas can be addressed in a single lower-body lift surgery, and liposuction can also be combined with a lower-body lift. It’s important to point out that a body lift is a significant surgery; for instance, a lower-body lift often requires circumferential incisions from the back, around the hips, and to the front of the thighs. These incisions can be placed so that they’re covered by clothing and/or are in the body’s naturally occurring creases.
An individual considering a body lift should also keep in mind that a body lift alone removes only excess or sagging skin, whereas liposuction removes only fat. A patient may or may not need both types of procedure to achieve the desired results.
What is recovery like From a Body Lift?
The recovery period following a body lift is significant. A patient can expect to have some temporary drains inserted in the incisions, as a nearly last step in the body lift procedure. The purpose of the drains is to let excess fluid drain away from the body.
A patient will probably also experience swelling and/or bruising after a body lift; these can be minimized by the post-surgery use of compression garments. Although rare, if significant pain is experienced, Dr. Slack will prescribe appropriate medication.
Returning to Your Normal Schedule After a Body Lift
The incisions performed for a body lift will take a month or so to heal completely, and Dr. Slack will be able to tell you more about what you can expect for your own specific recovery after a body lift. He will give you complete post-surgery instructions regarding:
- bed rest,
- physical activity,
- diet,
- medication,
- returning to work or your normal activity level
Post-body lift follow-up visits with Dr. Slack will be scheduled ahead of time, and Dr. Slack and his staff will be monitoring your recovery very closely.
